Rotating surface solitons.

We introduce a novel type of surface waves that form at the edge of guiding structures consisting of several concentric rings. Such surface waves rotate steadily upon propagation and, in contrast with nonrotating waves, for high rotation frequencies they do not exhibit power thresholds for their existence. There exists an upper limit for the surface wave rotation frequency, which depends on the...

Solitons supported by localized parametric gain.

We address the existence and properties of one-dimensional solitons maintained by localized parametric gain in focusing and defocusing lossy nonlinear media. Localized parametric gain supports both fundamental and multipole solitons. We found that the family of fundamental solitons is partly stable in focusing nonlinear medium, and completely stable in defocusing medium, while all higher-order ...

Rotating propeller solitons.

We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically (both analytically and numerically) a new type of spatial soliton: a rotating "propeller" soliton. This is a composite soliton made of a rotating dipole component jointly trapped with a bell-shaped component. We observe as much as 239 degrees of rotation over 13 mm of propagation (6.5 diffraction lengths).

Spatial optical solitons supported by mutual focusing.

We study composite spatial optical solitons supported by two-wave mutual focusing induced by cross-phase modulation in Kerr-like nonlinear media. We find the families of both single- and two-hump solitons and discuss their properties and stability. We also reveal remarkable similarities between recently predicted holographic solitons in photorefractive media and parametric solitons in quadratic...

Optical solitons supported by competing nonlinearities.

It is demonstrated that optical solitons can propagate in a dispersive (or diffractive) medium with competing quadratic [i.e., chi((2))] and cubic [i.e., chi((3))] nonlinearities. Strong interplay between the nonlinearities leads to novel effects, in particular the following: (i) stable bright solitons can still exist in a self-defocusing (owing to cubic nonlinearity) medium supported by quadra...
